GATE – BECAUSE I CARE! IS A REAL SLOGAN INDEED. I LEARNED MY BASIC COOKING SKILLS AT GATE, WHICH WAS AUGHT IN A REAL INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT. THE SOUND KNOWLEDGE OF HACCP ALONG WITH THE USE OF UTENSILS WAS IMPORTANT IN MY GROWTH. I AM REALLY THANKFUL TO ALL MY TEACHERS AND ESPECIALLY TO MR. KHEM LAKAI AND MR. SANDEEP SHIVA KHATRI AND I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT I KNOW I WOULD NOT BE WHO I AM TODAY WITHOUT GATE. I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT I LOOK FORWARD TO SHARE MY KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE TO GATE STUDENTS ONE DAY.
My memories of GATE College are still fresh and picturesque. Surrounded by a lush green environment, breathing fresh air, I can remember clearly how I felt as I entered the college premises for the first time. All those beautiful memories are permanent in my head; gathering with friends in our cozy coffee shop, endless assignments & group projects and finally going for an internship whilst exploring the Hotel Industry in real life, paved my way to the vibrant city Dubai.
Currently I am working as a Guest Service Agent in Sheraton Hotel, located in Mall of Emirates in Dubai. As I started my journey from GATE, I used to dream of a career in a 5 star property which turned into a reality already. All thanks to GATE and my precious teachers who helped me to become who I am today.
My name is Milan Karki. Currently, I am working as a Night Audit Manager for EOS by SkyCity Adelaide, Experience the Extraordinary.
I completed my Bachelor’s Degree from GATE College in 2016, I can truly say that the skills and experiences provided to me by the program and campus environment have allowed me to develop into a confident hospitality professional. This is something I believe is a result of the support and encouragement of the experts and their passion for their teachings.
While being on campus, I did my placement at The Ritz Carlton Doha from where my interest in the diverse opportunities in hospitality started, and it has only been a journey upwards since then.
With that knowledge and experience, I came to Australia to further learn and study international hospitality management. I worked on various national and international chain hotel groups in Australia in various hotel departments. I commenced my career as a Food and Beverage Attendant at first and started to grow from there.
One thinks, learning from self experience is a small step but it can make a big difference.
After completing my Certificate III (Batch III) in Commercial Cookery (SIT30816) of TAFE, from GATE College, I did my first internship at Hotel Royal Singhi followed by a Fast food restaurant at Thamel which was my first official job as a chef adapting western culinary basics, I happened to switch my forte into regional cuisine and started working at Raithaane where I learned about authentic food from different cultures of Nepal and began cooking with local and seasonal products.
As learning never ends, me and my partner started our very own stall as a food vendor at Farmers Market as well. It was a wonderful experience, interacting with people and promoting home made products and food from various places of Nepal along with all these diverse experiences.
Then later on, I thought of sharing my knowledge to the future culinary enthusiasts and through my own experience there could not have been any better institute than GATE College. I joined GATE College as a Chef instructor and am involved in teaching and learning programs with our students. It feels good to understand the young mindsets and train them accordingly with my skills and experience.
One of the best decisions I made for myself was to enroll at GATE College and I am very proud I made this decision when I did not know which direction to go and how to understand my own potential. It may look easy when you hear the buzz word passion, but I know many young people struggle without the right guidance. During and after my Diploma course in culinary program, I was guided, coached and mentored until I joined the mainstream profession. Then I never had to look back, as GATE is always standing tall as a lighthouse, I can clearly see the roadmap of my career.
I am currently working in Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah, one of the prestigious Accor group properties in Dubai. Culinary is one the best fields within the hospitality industry in my opinion because if you are willing to give your best, you surely win. However, the journey to success takes time therefore you need to have patience, willingness to work hard, be disciplined, be passionate and more importantly stay committed.
Being a female chef is challenging at times, even physically but when I know my goal, I enjoyed and embraced all the challenges, and I didn’t quit, then finally I learned once you have a clear goal, nothing is difficult and nothing stops you from achieving it. Yes, female chefs are not a myth; you can do it if you can visualize the power of success, and if you love to inspire others like me.
I am glad that I made the decision 4 years back to join this esteemed educational institute that provided a prestigious course here in our country itself. And I can proudly say that I don’t regret the decision I made. Not only quality education, GATE was an incubating platform to develop my entrepreneur skills. Hospitality is simply an opportunity to show love and care. I started my hospitality career in 2013 from GATE College. To be a successful hotelier was my aim and by joining GATE my dream came true. GATE taught me what the hotel industry is, what hospitality is? Khem Sir has been my role model, without his motivation and support my dream would not have succeeded. Today I am running my own hotel, MOJO Boutique Hotel, as a Managing Director. What we see can be captured in our hand. It is a tough road, yes, it is tough but not impossible, be a rare human who lives his life with his purpose.
GATE gives special emphasis on providing students with practical education than just theoretical education. The teachers here are not only lecturers but our guardians. Their main concern is to give our future a better shape. Getting an international degree under peaceful natural environment with multicultural faculty and friend circle is a boon for every student.
